Yuuki Cross/Yuuki Kuran (黒主 優姫/Kurosu Yūki 玖蘭 優姫/Kuran Yūki?) is the female protagonist of Vampire Knight. Yuki begins the story as a regular human, the adopted daughter of the headmaster of Cross Academy and a 16 year old first year student and a member of the school's disciplinary committee, acting as a Guardian protecting the Day Class from the vampires. In this capacity, she wields the Artemis Rod, the anti-vampire weapon which later transforms into a scythe.

Yuki is friends with Sayori Wakaba and Zero Kiryu, the latter of which she is determined to help once she discovers he is has been turned into a vampire. She has also been in love with Kaname Kuran since he saved her following her memory loss, she reaffirms her love for Kaname on a number of occasions to both Kaname and Zero, unaware that Zero has feelings for her. She is generally a cheerful and comedic character, but has a fear of vampires that means she rarely leaves the Cross Academy grounds on her own.[1] She is portrayed as excessively stupid, being a poor student and often kept ignorant by other characters who know more about goings-on.

Towards the climax of arc one, Yuki is revealed to actually be a pureblood vampire and daughter of Juri and Haruka Kuran. Ten years ago, threatened by Rido, Juri sacrificed herself to seal Yuki's vampiric side and erase her daughter's memory. Kaname re-awakened Yuki's vampire side when the threat of Rido returns. This revelation alienates Zero, but the two fight together to defeat Rido. The formerly close friends part ways after Zero tells Yuki he intends to kill all purebloods including her, while simultaneously revealing his feelings for her. Yuki left with Kaname, but advised Zero that she intended to run from him forever in order to keep him alive.

Yuki's character makes little progress during the timeskip, spending the entire time inside the Kuran mansion. She spends the time dealing with her former status as human, mirroring the same issues regarding giving into vampire hunger that had plagued Zero. At the same time, she admits to an unbreakable bond to Zero in her heart. She requests to stay by Kaname's side regardless expecting rejection, Kaname agrees and counters that he would rather die than be without her. Following the supposed suicide of a vampire at the peace ball, Yuki is provoked into taking action, leaving the Kuran mansion without permission, she vows to kill any pureblood intending suicide, to prevent the sacrifice of others, being completely unaware that the original death was actually murder.

Yuki's mission reunited her with Zero and he ends up taking an injured Yuki to a Vampire hunter safehouse. During her semi-consciousness, she almost bites Zero. Flustered Yuki calls herself a scatterbrain and returns home with Kaname.
