Haruhi Fujioka (藤岡 ハルヒ Fujioka Haruhi?) (born 4 February) age 15, then turns 16 in chapter 70, is the main character of the series.

Haruhi is an intelligent first-year student from a poor family who attends the Ouran Academy, an exclusive private school, on a special scholarship that requires her to rank first in her class. One day, while looking for a quiet place to study, she stumbles upon the Dreamy Host Club and accidentally breaks an expensive vase belonging to them that was to be featured in a school auction. As a result, she must work off her debt to the club by disguising herself as a boy and working as a host for them. She finds this easy because she does not feel that gender dominates her personality. She soon realizes that acting as host and talking to the other girls comes quite naturally and she begins to enjoy it. However, she does not like taking time away from studying and finds the antics of the other hosts extremely irritating, but also increasingly endearing.

In chapter 57 of the manga, Haruhi realizes that she`s in love with Tamaki. She is panicky and baffled by her discovery at first, and avoids Tamaki at any cost and blushes hard at his presence. Coming to accept her feelings, Haruhi decides she will have to learn alot more and grow more as a person before she can tell him. After this, she returns back to her old self, more or less, but still blushes on occasions if he gets too close or intimate. In chapter 62, she is confronted about her feelings by Hikaru, but still being unsure about how to cope with it, she`s unable to give a proper answer.

After hearing from Tamaki that he's quitting the club due to his busy studies at the main residence, and that she is allowed to quit as well, Haruhi confronts Tamaki with the reason but is coldly answered. He keeps on treating her harshly when she tries to find out more, by even leaving school to see his grandmother at the Suoh Company. Haruhi is greatly hurt by his angry and cold behavior, eventually leaving her to cry while she's hiding from another thunderstorm. However, she calms down and after having figured out what Tamaki's reason is by herself, she decides to stay away from him so that he won't have to worry about her when trying to get on good terms with his grandmother. Since she's no longer a Host, she's also gone back to dress in her chapter/episode 1 attire.

In chapter 78, she is once again asked by Hikaru if she loves Tamaki, in which she this time admits that she does. Hikaru tells her that he doesn't want to see Tamaki depressed and he asks her to confess. However she begins to worry about how he will receive her confession. In chapter 80, she and the rest of the Host Club together with familiar characters from the school manage to bring Tamaki to the airport in time for him to see his mother off.

At the end of the chapter, Haruhi finally tells Tamaki that she loves him.
